The buzz around campus is that it takes too much classtime to incorporate the technology to a level that runs smoothly. There is also buzz that some are not as knowledgable as they should be after all the required trainings designed to teach the teacher the skills necessary to use the technology with their students. They attend a required training then dont use the knowledge enough to raise their comfort level.

I predict PLC times being used as gradelevel/specialist/administrator "make and take time!" How useful and practical would it be to use our precious PLC times to collaborate on making effective lessons using the wealth of technology our district has provided?

Our students speak a different language than we do...we MUST speak their language. BTW its a digital language :-) and it's not going away...it only gets better for them and more challenging for us to teach to. We need to teach to their future.

This would give students additional opportunities to increase computer speed and skills, which for some students is sorely needed in order to even begin to master the needed tech SEs. This could then allow teachers to dedicate more of the class/computer lab time to use and teach technology across the curriculum, instead of using the computer-dedicated time for learning.com only.

This would not solve any problems, but it may go toward alleviating some of the time related issues.

Also, we must give students the opportunity to use computers.
I noticed something interesting this year with regards to learning.com the kids pass the lessons mindlessly then fail the quiz and have to retake it over and over and over until they pass.

I am seriously thinking of working with my team to see if we should up the required passing score for each lesson...70 percent to pass is not ok...im thinking 85 or 90...

These students learn and work in a non-linear fashion, and most of the systems I see out there are still what I would call "drill and skill" integrated learning systems converted to be "web based". We have to find a better way of presenting the skills and concepts using digital native tools such as iPods and netbooks and allow students to demonstrate mastery in a variety of means. In my experience, raising the passing score frustrates students further with what they often consider "boring" activities.
Typically, the emphasis for elementary grade campuses is on developing a sense of trust and security between the teacher and student. Technology is often treated more as an aide to the teacher rather than the center of learning as in later grades. Though probably not feasible for us at this time, employing a full-time instructional technologist would serve to facilitate teacher ability to understand and utilize technology in the classroom. In the interim though, perhaps the district instructional technologist who might be able to work with our teachers on training, lesson planning and effectively implementing new technology in the classroom. But we need to be able to articulate our needs.

Your question particularly emphasizes, “what we haven’t already tried.” One of the most important concepts regarding the purposeful use of educational technology is curriculum integration. I think that up to this point, we may have focused on learning technology skills and even examined issues involved in technology integration into the classroom. I think where we fall short is moving beyond that point to engaging students in activities which truly demonstrates integration of technology in the classroom or the potential for integration. Without question, the most important aspect of educational technology is the extent to which it can be used to enhance the teaching and learning process.
This is just one suggestion that we might be able to incorporate in a PLC session:

Let’s have teachers think about an instructional lesson or unit within their curriculum/content area, then reflect and address the following questions:

1. How can I incorporate technology into the unit?

2. Are there any instructional improvements that I can make to the lesson/unit?

3. Are there different delivery systems that I can use?

4. Can I increase productivity of student and teacher time by using technology?

5. Are there specific technology-based activities that we can do in order to enhance the lesson/unit and help students to learn concepts better? (Personally, I think this is the most important question!)

I think we need to take our discussions to the next level where we consider ways that the technologies we use can be incorporated into the existing curriculum. The key is enhancing instruction through technology-rich integration; rather than simply using computers in isolation (though this means has its place too).
Pam, your ideas on PLC are fabulous. I think your idea about having the teachers think about ONE lesson is going to be effective.

Let's think about ONE lesson, work together to make it truly technolocigally integrated, then teach that lesson and re-convene as a team to see what went wrong, what went right, what would we change, and then think about the next lesson!!! This process will be a bit tedious as far a getting toegther, making the lessons, etc. However, I think we would see an IMMEDIATE change in sucess for our student, and a growing level of comfort in our teachers as they APPLY everything our district and campus has taught them and actually see it working for them.

Veronica and I went to an inservice and sat and watched people play with technology. The whole time I was thinking to myself, is this what my kids feel like when I AM THE ONLY ONE USING THE STARBOARD??? I was completly bored sitting there all day watching two teachers use a great math program. If we had time to ourselves at these inservices to play with the program, make lessons, feel comfortable with it, we might actually be inclined to use it in our class WITH our kids. The important thing is getting the kids involved in the program and using it as well.
