Estimated Time
Are you smarter than the GRE?
Jolt the teachers into realizing that EVERYONE can learn new vocabulary:even teachers.
The learner will predict/guess the meaning and usage of a “new” (GRE level) vocabulary word.
I would pre-program challenging (GRE level) vocabulary words on a notecard and give each teacher one as they walked-in/signed-in. I would challenge the teachers to guess the meaning and use the word in a sentence. the teacher would turn them into me for use later.
10 minutes as people arrive.
Listen to reading/develop new vocabulary
Integrate technology with vocabulary development during reading
The learner will listen to reading using http://www.storylineonline.net/ Sebastian’s Roller Skates by Joan De Deu Prats Read by Caitlin Wachs.
The learner will listen to a story being read to them online (captioning available for all stories). The teacher will pick 2 to 3 words that would /should be obscure to their class of students.
7 minutes
Vocabulary Board
Use Appleworks Vocabulary board to map out the selected words from the story “Sebastian’s Roller Skates”
The learner will use a graphic organizer in Apple Works to map the word, it’s meaning, part of speech, synonyms, antonyms, and sentence usage. The learner will insert clip-art or a photo is possible.
The teachers will open Apple Works on their computer and navigate to the KISD vocabulary board. They would the “fill in the blanks” of the graphic organizer, including a picture if possible. Then the learner will print and post their completed boards around the room (perhaps sort them by parts of speech).
20 minutes
Q & A
Time for question and answer/sharing time among the teachers.
the teacher will share successes and failures when it comes to vocabulary development among their students.
10 minutes
Closing
review the Challenge words given at the beginning of the class.
The learner will realize the actual definition of the GRE level word they received at the beginning of the class.
In a pre-made powerpoint, I will display each word, it’s real definition and proper sentence usage.Comparing it to what the teachers thought the definition and usage was. This (hopefully) will end our class on a laughing note as the teachers realize their definitions and usage were(more than likely) incorrect.
